I’m sure you’ve heard the buzz word “hair or curl type.” Honestly, when I first heard the phrase, my guess was that it meant hair color, like the hair extension bought at the beauty supply store. Silly me. After further research, I’ve concluded that hair type actually refers to a thorough analysis and detail understanding of one’s hair texture, density, porosity and elasticity. Knowing your hair type is important to find and use the best products for your hair. For newly naturals it serves as a starting point in finding good products. The truth is, like many others, my hair has three different textures, my density is medium, my hair low porosity with normal elasticity. As time went on, through trial and error, I’ve found the best products for my hair and ultimately learn enough about this theory to make my own products!
I found this chart on the internet which in my opinion should be more accurately called “hair curl pattern.” My hair is a combination of 3b/3c/4a/4b; four curl patterns.
Again knowing your hair type, includes knowing your hair’s texture, density, porosity and elasticity are all equally important in selecting the right product/ingredients for your hair.
Let’s examine these keywords and term involved in analysis of the hair:
Hair Texture: is the thickness or diameter of the individual hair strand.Hair Density: measures the number of individual hair strand on 1 square inch of scalp (fullness).
Hair Porosity: is the ability of the hair to absorb moisture.
Hair Elasticity: is the ability of the hair to stretch and return to its original length without breaking.
What’s your hair type? Have you done a thorough analysis of your hair and scalp? Please share.
