Hi Beauties…how is everyone doing? I just wanted to share that this past Sunday was my NOW weekly wash day. I’m now washing my hair weekly because of the change in weather/low to zero humidity (winter/colder/dry air months). I’m also using large two strand twist with ends protected to style my hair and to keep my hair “gym ready” for my daily workout, lol.
Let me tell you, my hair has experienced a major growth spurt! So much so, that finger detangling during my PREPOO process took a lot longer than normal, which was okay because I NEVER handle my hair when I’m in a rush.
This means that my hair is currently going through the ANAGEN (growth phase) of the Hair Growth Cycle!
I did notice a bit more shedding that usual, but this is to be expected because my hair is also going through TELOGEN (resting or shedding phase). During this phase, hair remains in place on the head or sheds, as new hair pushes out older hair from the hair follicles.
Hair growth occurs in three cycles: Anagen (growth phase), generally last from three to five years), Catagen (transition phase), generally last one to two weeks and the Telogen (resting/shedding phase), generally last for three to six months.
The longer the ANAGEN (growth phase), the longer the hair is able to grow! This is why some people can grow their hair to shoulder length, while others can grow it down to the floor!
Let’s examine this fact a little further. Hair grows an average of 1/2 inch per month or 6 inches per year. Meaning that in a three (3) to five (5) year period, your hair can potentially grow 18 inches to 30 inches!!! Protect your hair and ends during the Anagen phase and watch it GROW!!!
I personally know this to be true. My three year journey is a testament to this FACT and I’ve cut off 6 – 8 inches of my hair during this period. Additionally, my sister Janice’s relaxed hair literally touches her butt. She hates pictures but allowed me to take a pic of her hair last year (November 2012), lol. I’ll repost again with her permission. She has a long Anagen phase. Her hair is normally worn in a bun, scarfed at night and rarely worn out and down, lol.
If your hair is not growing and you’re doing everything else correctly (clean scalp, diet, exercise, water, no hormonal or medication issues, etc.), it could be a signal that (1) you have a short Anagen (growth phase), or (2) you’ve reached your hair break point (excessive exposing your hair ends or dry hair end touching or rubbing on your shoulders/collar or back, causing it to break — negative hair RETENTION.
Ever wonder why men and women can easily grow locs to waist length or down to the ground like my homeboy and childhood friend Grantley Samuel? While most of it is largely due to genetics, Grantley’s excellent nutrition and a “lack of hand-in-hair or head” syndrome, is a major contributor to his hair growth! With his permission, I’ll post a pic of his hair, which he shared with his FB friends during his most recent wash day. Grantley is a farmer on St. Croix and eat right and he leaves his hair alone. That’s right ladies, keep your hands out of your hair (low manipulation) and it will grow. (I’ll share more on this topic in another post).
If healthy hair growth is your desired goal, here are a few tips and best practices which have served me well and I recommend:
(1) I recommend that you adapt a simple but routine hair regimen, (2) use oil rinsing in your hair regimen, (3) use the LOC or LCO method to deposit and lock in or seal moisture into your hair cuticles (4) always keep your exposed and/or protected natural hair and ends super moisturized. (My hair is NEVER dry. It is almost in a semi-damp/moist state to the touch; especially during the winter months), (5) use PROTECTIVE styling to preserve/protect your hair ends, preventing hair breakage, (6) keep your hands out of your hair; low manipulation, (7) use the green house effective to keep hair moisturized indoors when using central heating during the winter months, (8) rid your hair of damaged, split or broken ends (9) increase your protein intake. Hair is largely made of KERATIN (protein) and hair LOVES protein for strength/growth, and (10) continue a healthy diet, exercise and water consumption program.
